WORDS OF GREETING AND GATHERING

Daniel Green

WELCOMING STATEMENT

RISE believes that God has open arms, and so should we. Our Creator wants us to love, accept and affirm every human being, including persons of every age, race, ethnic background, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, family or socioeconomic status, educational background, religion or creed, and physical or mental ability. We celebrate our diversity and recognize the sacred worth and dignity of all. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join us as we seek to follow Jesus with mutual respect, understanding, and love.

OPENING MUSIC

Maggie McClary

“Indescribable”

~Chris Tomlin

From the highest of heights
to the depths of the sea
Creation’s revealing Your Majesty
From the colors of fall
To the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
All exclaiming

Indescribable, uncontainable
You place the stars in the sky
and you know them by name
You are amazing God
All powerful, untamable
Awestruck we fall to our knees
As we humbly proclaim
You are amazing, God

Who has told every lightning bolt
Where it should go?
Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow?
Who imagined the sun
and gives source to its light
Yet conceals it to bring us
the coolness of night
None can fathom

Indescribable, uncontainable
You place the stars in the sky
and you know them by name
You are amazing God
All powerful, untamable
Awestruck we fall to our knees
As we humbly proclaim
You are amazing, God

Incomparable, unchangeable
You see the depths of my heart
And You love me the same
You are amazing God
You are amazing God

“You’re Beautiful”

~Phil Wickham

I see Your face in every sunrise
The colors of the morning are inside Your eyes
The world awakens in the light of the day
I look up to the sky and say
You’re beautiful

You’re beautiful
Ooh, Ooh

I see Your power in the moonlit night
Where planets are in motion and galaxies are bright
We are amazed in the light of the stars
It’s all proclaiming who you are

You’re beautiful
Ooh, Ooh
(2x)

I see You there hanging on a tree
You bled and then You died
And then You rose again for me
Now You are sitting on your heavenly throne
Soon we will be coming home

You’re beautiful
Ooh, Ooh
(2x)

When we arrive on eternity’s shore
Where death is just a memory
And tears are no more
We’ll enter in as the wedding bells ring
Your bride will come together and we’ll sing

You’re beautiful
Ooh, Ooh
(2x)

I see your face
You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful
(3x)

Scripture Reading

Mark 9:1-10 (The Message)

1 Then [Jesus] drove it home by saying, “This isn’t pie in the sky by and by. Some of you who are standing here are going to see it happen, see the kingdom of God arrive in full force.”

2-4 Six days later, three of them did see it. Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. His clothes shimmered, glistening white, whiter than any bleach could make them. Elijah, along with Moses, came into view, in deep conversation with Jesus.

5-6 Peter interrupted, “Rabbi, this is a great moment! Let’s build three memorials—one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah.” He blurted this out without thinking, stunned as they all were by what they were seeing.

7 Just then a light-radiant cloud enveloped them, and from deep in the cloud, a voice: “This is my Son, marked by my love. Listen to him.”

8 The next minute the disciples were looking around, rubbing their eyes, seeing nothing but Jesus, only Jesus.

9-10 Coming down the mountain, Jesus swore them to secrecy. “Don’t tell a soul what you saw. After the Son of Man rises from the dead, you’re free to talk.” They puzzled over that, wondering what on earth “rising from the dead” meant.

TABLE AND LIVE CHAT DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Have you had a “mountaintop experience” in your faith journey? What was it like “coming down from the mountain”? Did it live up the hype? How does it still impact you today? (Does it?)

  2. The good book tells us that there is a time for everything, so we can assume there is a time to speak about our faith experiences and a time to NOT talk about our faith experiences. What do you think makes the difference? How do we decide which is which?

  3. Do you agree with the idea that “we make the way by walking it?” Why or why not? What does embracing such an idea mean for a person or a community of faith like RISE?

SONG

“Build my life”

~Housefires

Worthy of every song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

Jesus, the name above every other name
Jesus, the only one who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You, Oh we live for You

Holy, there is no one like You
There is none besides You
Open up my eyes in wonder
Show me who You are
and fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me

Worthy of every song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

Jesus, the name above every other name
Jesus, the only one who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You, Oh we live for You

Holy, there is no one like You
There is none besides You
Open up my eyes in wonder
Show me who You are
and fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me
(2x)

And I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
And I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken
(2x)

Holy, there is no one like You
There is none besides You
Open up my eyes in wonder
Show me who You are
and fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me

OFFERING AND NOMOFOMO

One of our core values is, "God gives to us, so we give back." We're called to give as a joy-filled response to what we've been given. Your financial gifts make a tremendous difference in the lives of God's beloved in Harrisonburg and beyond. Whether it's helping to make sure children in our community have enough to eat, helping to respond to the mental health crisis in our community, or providing much needed backing for the operating costs of our spaces and staff — your gift is a part of God's dream and we are grateful for everyone who partners with us on this journey!

Due to the illness of one of the hosts, the “Big Game” watch party at the Zepps has unfortunately been canceled. For anyone needing a place to watch the game with friends, Alexis and Seth Owens are inviting anyone to join them at Brothers Brewery for the event. So you can still bring your own food and enjoy the company of friends while watching the spectacle on the Big Screen. DM us or contact Alexis directly if you have any questions.
