THEOLOGICAL EXPLORATION

Last week, we spent time with the story of Pentecost - the gift of the Holy Spirit and the “birthday” of the church. We are continuing that conversation this week. What is “church”? What was it intended to be? What could it become?

Acts 4:32-35 (CEB)

32 The community of believers was one in heart and mind. None of them would say, “This is mine!” about any of their possessions, but held everything in common. 33 The apostles continued to bear powerful witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and an abundance of grace was at work among them all. 34 There were no needy persons among them. Those who owned properties or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds from the sales, 35 and place them in the care and under the authority of the apostles. Then it was distributed to anyone who was in need.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND CONVERSATION:

  • This is a vision of the early church. What do you initially notice? What makes you curious?

  • How would you define the word “church?” What are we really talking about when we use that word?

  • How is the church described in this story similar to the church you know today? How does it differ?

  • What does the church’s origins and early history have to teach us about its two thousand year-long story? What wisdom does this story have to offer the church today?

  • Is there any need for/use for the church today? Why or why not?

  • What are your hopes and dreams for the church? What are God’s dreams for the church?

“Dear CHurch” Letters

Video introduction and invitation from Pastor Amanda and Caroline Palmore on socials…

Write a letter to the church. Start with the words “Dear Church,…” and then say what you need to say to the church.

  • How has the church inspired you? Where have you seen its beauty?

  • What do you grieve for the church? What is painful?

  • What are your hopes and dreams for the church?

Share as there is willingness and time.

FINAL BLESSING
